Buses : Public bus service in Mauritius is efficient & cheap though the condition of the buses are not very good. Almost every part of the island can be reached by the bus. The buses operate from 0530 hours to 2000 hours in urban regions & 0630 hours to 1830 hours in the rural areas.

Taxis : These can be hired from the travel desks of all hotels or from the taxi stands for half or a full day. The fares should be discussed before the commencement of the journey, as the taxis are not metered in Mauritius. Most of them are air-conditioned & some of them are fitted with portable phones. Taxis have white registeration plates.

Mauritius is not a very big Island. For the leisure traveler the preferred location of stay is a beach resort. Most Beach Resorts are far removed from the main roads which are connected by the Public Transport System i.e. the Buses. Hence for a tourist the recommended mode of transport is the taxi.
